SAN FRANCISCO -- A conference dominated by chips, servers, and wireless radios really owes it all to just a good teacher. And if not that, than someone doing a small, good thing.

In a keynote address opening the Intel Developer Forum here, Intel chairman Craig Barrett announced four $100,000 prizes that will be awarded next year. An inventor can visit IntelChallenge.com and submit his idea in four areas: healthcare, economic development, education, and the environment. The money will be used to implement the idea, not as a reward.

At a recent conference on IT in Kuala Lumpur, Barrett said he came back to his hotel one night to see this message left next to a candy on his pillow: "A small deed done is better than a great deed planned." "We have the opportunity to a number of great small deeds," Barrett said.

As he has moved into the chairman's role, Barrett has increasingly taken a "softer" role, leaving the...  ...Read Full Article HERE

news from Ofcom , (The independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications
industries. )

Ofcom: Every home can have 50Mb broadband
A very odd piece of news emanating from the people at Ofcom

They have looked at an idealised environment along with the DSL-affecting line lengths from the exchange (based on a real network), and declared on the back of it that every home in the UK can have 50Mb broadband.

That is, of course, as long as they live in an idealised environment.

They say:

"Given the important relationship of distance to data rate, we based our model on information on cable lengths from a real network.

We concluded that, in our idealised environment, capacities can further improve, compared to today's deployments.

We found that if the upstream modem is hosted in the exchange, households within 2km of the exchange (approximately 18 per cent of the total...  ...Read Full Article HERE

Intel on Wednesday announced that a draft specification of the Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) of USB 3.0.

The 0.9 draft announcement was expected, and some form of additional demonstration at the Intel Developer Forum next week is likely. However, the 0.95 version of the specification won't be out until the fourth quarter, so USB 3.0 products probably won't be expected until next year.

USB 3.0, also known as "SuperSpeed USB," is designed to dramatically increase the bandwidth of USB, lower power consumption, and maintain backwards compatibility with the current USB 2.0 specification. SuperSpeed USB are will provide a 10X boost in transfer rate from 480-Mbits/s in USB 2.0 to 4.8 GBits/s in USB 3.0. One example of the speed goal is to transfer a 27-GByte HD movie to a portable device in 70 seconds. The same thing would take 15 minutes or more with USB 2.0.

The xHCI interface specification won support from AMD,...  ...Read Full Article HERE

Can Apple "kill switch" zap an app off your iPhone?
The big buzz in the blogosphere is about the Apple iPhone "Kill Switch." The "switch" is believed to be a mechanism that can be updated remotely (no syncing required) by Apple and can disable any application running on an iPhone at any time.
8/12/2008 7:00:00 AM By: Brennon Slattery and Dan Moren

Apple wields ultimate control over applications running on your iPhone. If it doesn't like an app it flips a "kill switch" that zaps an unpalatable iTunes App off your iPhone in a heart beat.

At least that's...  ...Read Full Article HERE

What is testmy.net

testmy.net is an internet connection benchmark.  We offer Download and Upload connection speed tests.  We offer connection history logging as well as host stats.  This is a 100% free site and you can test as much as you need to.  testmy.net is able to bring you some of the most accurate results due to our centrally located US server on the UUnet / Global Crossing backbone.  Unlike some speed testing sites, testmy.net uses only highly compressed data for testing to ensure that you are testing from data that your provider has no way of compressing (therefore this site will show you what your real line speed is, not what your provider wants you to think... common among satellite providers).  Also, with 'SmarTest' Testmy.net will automatically adjust for your line speed and use the most optimal test size for your connection type.  testmy.net is a 100% word-of-mouth advertised site, so the growth and success of the site relies on it's users, so please keep visiting, and please pass this site on to friends.  You will notice that there is constant development and growth with this site, this also relies on our users input... if you encounter any bug please post in the forum under this section and if you like the site and would like to add your input to a great growing online community please join for free.

See a glitch or bug?  Or just have an idea on how to make the site better... Post in this special section of our forum.
